The Biggest problem that people face when making use of self tanning lotions is that of streaking. The skin resembles the coat of a tiger with a combination of dark and light colored stripes. The problem lies in the fact that you have to ready your skin prior to applying the self tanning lotion.
So if your looking to catch a self-tan, there are a few things you have to do, prerequisites if you will.

1, EXFOLIATE! ~ You have too, plain and simple, get in that shower grab a loofah, wash cloth and start body scrubbing, you need to remove all your dead skin before introducing a self tan product to your skin. This prevents you from streaking. and you should do this for a few days each day before apply tanners.
2. MOISTURIZE!~You must moisturize your skin prior to any self tan session , if you neglect doing this step you will streak.
3. SHAVE!~ Shaving a few days prior is a good idea before tanning, is also exfoliates your skin. it all comes down to exfoliation!
Be slow & gentle and don't rush when your actually applying self tanner, you need to be extremely gentle to begin with. Make sure that you rub the lotions onto the skin completely , Lotions are better for people who are more likely develop streaks compared to quick drying lotions, just the saying, quick drying doesn't make me feel secure. The lotion gives you more time to smoothen out the uneven areas thereby reducing the chances of getting streaks. And always remember to wash and scrub your hands, of here's a better tip, where gloves!

4. Your FACE~ when you are self-tanning your face, blend the formula into the hairline so there's no color blocking on your face. Always have your hair pulled back when doing this, also, a tip for you, try mixing it with a bit of your facial moisturizer to cute the chances of staining or being to orange. and don't use the same tanner that's for your body, use face lotions for face, that's why they make them for your face.

Check out the various types of self-tanner available~
Creams: Quick to dry and the most common type of formula; however, they can streak easily.
Lotions: Easy to apply, but take the longest to dry because they need to be properly rubbed in.
Gels: Color develops quickly but can dry the skin.
Foams: Dry fast but are more difficult to apply.
Mists/Sprays: Best for more experienced self-tanners because it’s hard to reach the back, shoulders and smaller areas.
Towelettes: Work well on the face and for touch-ups.
